More Than a Handout,
A Greeting.

Removing the stigma of charity through the art of the check-in.

The Tradition: "Have you eaten yet?"

At Food1st, we don’t lead with "Do you need help?" Instead, we lead with a question rooted in thousands of years of community care.

The Translation: "Have you eaten yet?"

In many East Asian cultures, this isn't just a question about food—it is the ultimate way to ask "How are you?" or "I care about your well-being." It originates from times of food scarcity where ensuring someone had a meal was the ultimate sign of respect and community care.

The "Soft Opening" Script

When our volunteers approach someone on the street, they use the Three-Step Connection:

1. The Neighborly Opening

"Good morning! My name is Alex, and I'm with Food1st. I'm just checking in on the neighborhood today... have you eaten yet?"

2. The Offering

If no: "I’m so glad we caught you. We have a small pack you can eat right now, and a Care Pack for tomorrow. Would you like them?"

If yes: "That’s great! We have these 24-Hour Packs specifically for later tonight or tomorrow morning. Would you like to keep one with you just in case?"

3. The Closing & Omotenashi

Inspired by the Japanese culture of Omotenashi (wholehearted hospitality) and the spirit of O-daiji-ni (take care of yourself).

"It was good meeting you. Please, enjoy this, and take care of yourself today."
